Armour Thyroid

Armour Thyroid

Armour is an FDA-approved drug and has been on the market for more than 100 years.
Since the early 1900s, Armour Thyroid was the only treatment for hypothyroidism until Synthroid was introduced about 50 years ago.

Armour Thyroid Facts

Armour Thyroid is made from desiccated (dried) pork thyroid glands.
The Armour Thyroid tablets are produced by collecting, processing, drying, powdering and then compounding the porcine thyroid glands.

Inactive ingredients in the Armour Thyroid tablets include:-

  • Calcium stearate,
  • dextrose,
  • microcrystalline cellulose,
  • sodium,
  • starch glycolate
  • and opadry white.

Endocrinologists frequently say, that Armour Thyroid is "not as consistent" as the synthetic product as it was made from animal thyroid.

Now, these statements are proving to be baseless and unscientific, as the producers of the Armour Thyroid Tablets perform a lot of analytical tests to ensure consistency.

In my opinion, many doctors financially benefit from their relationship with Synthroid, and therefore have a vested interest in seeing the downfall of its competitors. The T4 and T3 activities are then measured in the different lots of thyroid powder, which are then mixed together and analyzed to achieve the desired ratio of T4 to T3 in each lot of tablets.

This method ensures that each tablet of Armour Thyroid will be consistent with the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) official standards and specifications for desiccated thyroid lot-to-lot consistency. The ratio of T4 to T3 equals 4.22:1 (4.22 parts of T4 to one part of T3).
