Millions of people worldwide are suffering from thyroid conditions but are not aware of it. It is a very common disease but the irony is that people are not even sure if their symptoms are due to a thyroid disease. The thyroid gland is actually, a small bowtie or a butterfly shaped gland located at the front of the neck directly below the Adam's apple. The thyroid gland manufactures several different hormones out of which two are the most essential ones. These are the tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin (T4). These hormones help oxygen to get into the cells and thus regulate the metabolic activities and this is the reason for thyroid being called the master gland of metabolism. Thyroid is also, the only gland in the body, which contains cells capable of absorbing iodine. The hormones of the thyroid gland are the cause for growth, and many other body functions. Thyroid disease develops when the thyroid is unable to supply sufficient hormones needed by the body to carry out its various functions properly.
