Thyroid Conditions

Millions of people worldwide are suffering from thyroid conditions but are not aware of it. It is a very common disease but the irony is that people are not even sure if their symptoms are due to a thyroid disease. In a vast number of cases, the thyroid problems go untreated because people are unaware that they are suffering from a thyroid problem.

This article gives you a brief overview of the thyroid gland and the symptoms associated with this disease.

The thyroid gland is actually, a small bowtie or a butterfly shaped gland located at the front of the neck directly below the Adam's apple.

The thyroid gland manufactures several different hormones out of which two are the most essential ones. These are the tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin (T4). These hormones help oxygen to get into the cells and thus regulate the metabolic activities and this is the reason for thyroid being called the master gland of metabolism. Thyroid is also, the only gland in the body, which contains cells capable of absorbing iodine. The hormones of the thyroid gland are the cause for growth, and many other body functions.

Thyroid disease develops when the thyroid is unable to supply sufficient hormones needed by the body to carry out its various functions properly. As the symptoms of thyroid are often noticed over a period of time, they are usually misdiagnosed.

Different Types of Thyroid Diseases:

  • Hypothyroidism -- An under active thyroid.
  • Hyperthyroidism -- An overactive thyroid gland. This causes the body to use up energy more rapidly than required and chemical activities in the cells such as metabolism happen at a higher rate.
  • Goiter -- A swollen or inflated thyroid.
  • Thyroid Nodules -- A protuberance or swelling in the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid Cancer -- A thyroid nodule which is highly harmful and characterized by uncontrolled growth.
  • Thyroiditis -- Swelling of the thyroid gland.

When the thyroid gland doesn't function properly, it affects every aspect of your health and most of the times it affects your weight, causes depression and a significant change in our energy levels too.
